On July 9, 2018, CEE Legal Matters reported on the launch of Suciu | The Employment Law Firm ⎯ a new boutique law firm in Romania specializing in Employment law: . We sat down with the new firm’s Managing Partner, Andreea Suciu, to learn more about what her new boutique will bring to the legal market.

CEELM: To start, tell us a bit about yourself and the reasoning behind the launch of your firm.

A.S.: I started my career in law at age 23, as Junior Associate at one of the most prestigious German law firms in Bucharest. The degree of independence offered at the firm, combined with the opportunity to develop myself professionally and to test my entrepreneurial skills ensured my loyalty over the past 13 years. It was a beautiful evolution ⎯ both challenging and rewording ⎯ which led to my promotion in 2013 to the position of Head of Employment & Pensions, followed by another in 2017 to the role of coordinator of the law firm’s CEE Employment Law Practice.

In the spring of this year I decided to take a leap of faith and turn a long time dream into reality. That’s how I set up Suciu I The Employment Law Firm. There are two reasons why I decided to focus on employment law – one reason is my passion for this area of law and the other reason is that the pure focus on this practice area allows us to excel at developing creative, practical solutions to today’s most complex and sophisticated employment law issues.

CEELM: Can you give us a feel of the types of solutions you are developing?

A.S.: Employment law represents far more than just drafting employment contracts or dismissing employees. It has evolved into a vibrant and fascinating practice, not only due to the development of workforce-oriented industries, such as IT, shared services, and outsourcing, but also due to the fact that more and more companies realize that staying competitive requires focusing on healthy employment relationships and managing employment law compliance.

Being active on the market for so many years now has allowed us to identify and address the current needs of companies by developing a series of revolutionary products. One of them pertains to modern online or digital training delivery methods, including eLearning, mLearning (mobile learning), and live online training, which enable companies with several locations spread throughout the country to reduce costs by centralizing training online, allowing for reusable material and self-paced learning.

Another product we put great effort into developing is what is called "Post-Merger Employee Integration.” Far too often we have witnessed how companies pay little or no attention to integrating after the completion of an M&A transaction. Unfortunately, this often leads to disengaged employees and operational disruption. That is why we developed a best practice approach to running speedy, but controlled, post-merger employee integration projects.

Besides developing innovative solutions for today’s most challenging employment issues, our aim is to bring added value to the HR community. With this in mind we set up the HR Roundtable – a free-of-charge networking tool that enables HR Managers from various industries to meet and exchange valuable information with peers in an informal atmosphere.

CEELM: What does your team look like at the moment and what are your growth plans?

A.S.: We develop our products together with a team of dedicated professionals, consisting of an Of Counsel, a Tax and Financial Advisor, and a Digital Learning Programs Designer. This year our team will be joined by one Associate. For projects involving other specific areas of law, we collaborate with carefully selected partners.

For our international projects, such as international mobility, we resort to different international employment law associations in order to collaborate with the best experts in the field.

CEELM: What can we expect from Suciu | The Employment Law Firm in the near future?

A.S.: Our short-term targets are to expand our team by one Associate and to raise awareness about the innovative products we promote and the high quality legal advice we offer in order to achieve our mid- and long-term target: Becoming the "The Employment Law Firm of Choice."

Furthermore, we aim to strengthen our position on the CEE market. In view of this we are working on developing a CEE network of law firms specializing in Employment Law. The network will not only enable the exchange of valuable know-how with expert peers but also facilitate the collaboration on joint cross-border projects.
